This trip begins in the foothills of the Cevennes and explores one of the most impressive natural features of the region, the Cirque de Navacelles. Here, the river has carved a deep meander through the surrounding limestone plateau, encircling the tiny village of Navacelles, enclosed by towering walls of rock.
From here you continue across the Causse de Larzac to say in a welcoming auberge in the heart of a caussenarde village. You then continue through a mediterranean landscape of sparkling white limestone hills to the village of Saint Guilhem-le-Desert, an ancient site of pilgrimage whose 11thC abbey is a Unesco World Heritage site. Dropping down into the shelter of the village from the wildness of the surrounding hills is a memorable experience. The village dates back to 806 when it was established as a place of retreat and the site retains a special magic today.
To sit in the shady square in front of the abbey on a warm evening is a well earned treat at the end of your holiday.
You spend two nights in St Guilhem to give you a chance to have a free day at the end of your trip to enjoy the abbey and the village. You could also explore more paths through the surrounding hills or take a canoe trip up a particularly beautiful stretch of the Herault river.
